Why We Measure Success by How Our Communities Are Doing

Why We Measure Success by How Our Communities Are Doing

When We Succeed, Our Communities Do Better

Leave It Better Than You Found It

Long before either of us had a real estate license, Rachel was selling neighborhood t-shirts. Not for profit, to fund murals. The idea was simple: if people feel proud of where they live, they take care of it. A t-shirt with your neighborhood's name on it is a small thing. A mural that a neighborhood paid for together, block by block, t-shirt by t-shirt, is not.

That instinct: pride of place, funded from the ground up, is still how we think about this work. We just have more tools now.

What a Little Extra Real Estate Money Can Do

Real estate is one of the few businesses where doing right by a client and doing right by a neighborhood aren't in tension. A well-priced home, a smooth close, a family that gets to put down roots — that's the job. But every closing is also an opportunity to put something back: sponsoring a Little League team, funding another mural, chipping in on a park cleanup, supporting the small businesses that make a place worth living in.

It's not complicated. It's the t-shirt table, scaled up.

Roots Across the East Bay

Rachel Melby is raising her family in El Cerrito--the same streets, the same schools, the same community meetings where you run into your clients at the hardware store. Rachel Sheftel is digging in roots in North Berkeley, building the kind of long-term stake in a neighborhood that changes how you show up for it. Between the two of us, we're not just working these markets. We live in them.

That matters more than it might sound like. An agent who's leaving town in five years optimizes differently than one whose kids go to the local school. We're picking paint colors for murals we'll drive past for the next twenty years.

Why This Shapes How We Work

When a neighborhood does well: safer streets, better parks, thriving local businesses, a real sense of pride of place... home values follow. But we don't think about it backwards. We're not investing in community because it's good for business. It's good for business because we invest in community. The order matters.

So when you work with us, you're not just hiring someone to manage a transaction. You're working with two people who have a personal stake in whether El Cerrito and North Berkeley are better five years from now than they are today, and who've been putting in that work since long before it had anything to do with real estate.
